Renault Megane Coupe 1.9D 130bhp Dynamique dCi - RENAULT MEGANE Car Review
Added: 21 Nov 2010
SIX new versions of the Renault Megane are now on the market vying for a share of the hatchback market.
Building on the fine achievements of the originals, the French car giant has provided plenty of quality, style, engineering and finish in cars which are appealing and reassuring in looks, rewarding to drive and environmentally responsible and, recently, I took to the tarmac in Renault’s latest version of the Megane Coupe.
There are five trim options from which to choose, Expression, Music Special Edition, Dynamique Tom Tom, Privilege Tom Tom and GT and here I have opted to take the middle line, Dynamique Tom Tom, for this particular road test.
Kit levels are generous throughout the range, the entry level Expression model including CD player, electric windows and heated door mirrors.
Dynamique adds the likes of air con, 16-inch alloys, cruise control, front fogs, keyless entry with Renault card while driver safety aids include ABS braking with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, plus electronic stability programme with anti-skid regulator and under-steer control.
Looking well put together, the Megane is built at Renault’s recently modernised Spanish plant in Palencia.
Spaciously comfortable front of house, while the coupe did suffer just a little from head height limitations in the rear, accommodation for two proved quite comfortable while the boot was pretty generous, providing some 344 litres in the luggage bay with all seats taken.
This extended to 991 litres with rear seats folded while a further 33 litres of under floor stowage space is a hidden bonus.
Power is via a 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine paired with a smooth slotting six-speed manual gear change and while the 130bhp delivered some really useful lowdown torque and with 0-62mph coming in 9.5 seconds, this Renault could be considered a pretty brisk coupe.
Precise handling, too, is commendable, the sport chassis with stiffer springs and dampers delivering a more rewarding driving experience than its hatchback stablemate.
There is also a comfortable ride and, despite the presence of a little roll through the bends, the Megane dealt in very businesslike fashion with some nasty potholes over the urban trawl.
Judging by roadside bystander reaction, this latest Megane Coupe proved quite a head turner and with stylish looks, agreeable performance plus a generous value for money appeal there is much to here to tempt buyers.
