THE wraps have been lifted off the first model from new Chinese auto maker Qoros ahead of the car’s world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Named GQ3, the newcomer is a Ford Focus-sized saloon and will herald the design themes and styling features due to follow at six-month intervals following GQ3’s launch late next year.

With former MINI styling guru Gert Volker Hildebrand heading up the design team Qoros is promising a stable of cars geared to European tastes and engineered to achieve top crash test ratings.

In the case of the GQ3 there’s an elegant profile with long wheelbase, short overhangs, a coupe-like silhouette and flowing roofline while at 1,839mm, it is one of the widest cars in its class.

A prominent matt aluminium strip above each side sill adds to the visual stretch of the profile and the muscular arches accommodate up to 19-inch alloy wheels.

Up front the car’s face with wide headlamps sets the template for Qoros models to follow and the standard alloy wheels feature a triple-split eight-spoke design - another signature design element for the brand.

Neither engine nor price details have been released but Qoros says the GQ3 will set new standards for cars produced in China and will be comparable with the best-selling vehicles in Europe.

Equipment will include an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system that enables users to manage entertainment, navigation, Cloud connectivity and in-car networking with a smartphone-style finger swipe.

It allows drivers to book dealer service appointments, features an automatic emergency services alert in the event of an accident and includes traffic info and points-of-interest search.

Qoros deputy chairman Volker Steinwascher said: “During the development of the GQ3, we directed all our efforts towards the needs and expectations of today’s young, aspirational customers.

“They are very sensitive about design and quality, are highly sophisticated users of technology, and insist on the very best safety standards. As an entirely new brand, we have the advantage of being able to focus our efforts, without compromise or distraction, on meeting the demands of these customers.”
