Striking, simple and able, the 147 is Alfa Romeo's typically Italian entrant into the crowded Golf and Focus market. A very good car with a stand out interior and excellent engines, the 147 is well worth considering.
Reliability concerns around the Alfa badge have kept prices soft though the cars are very reliable if well serviced. The 147 has soul - something all too often missing at this end of the market.
Avoid the Selespeed automatic gearbox as it breaks more than it works. The diesel engines are typically brilliant Fiat units but they command a hefty premium over the smoother petrol engines.
Petrol models make great used buys. A five year old 2.0 petrol will cost, on average £1200 less than its diesel counterpart and will have similar mileage. Insurance is two groups higher but servicing is cheaper. Go for mid range Lusso trim.
Pay around £4800 for a five year old 2.0 petrol Lusso. A similar spec 1.9 JTDM diesel will cost £2000 more.
The best time to buy is at five years old. Depreciation can be as high as 30% in the first year. There is another big drop at 3 years.
