Beautiful, comfortable and able, the 156 is Alfa Romeo's typically Italian take on the family saloon. The cars are bigger than a focus but smaller than a Mondeo. A very good car with a stand out interior and excellent engines.
Reliability concerns around the Alfa badge have kept prices soft though the cars are very reliable if well serviced. The 156, like all Alfas, has soul. A great alternative to the norm.
Avoid the Selespeed automatic gearbox as it doesn't work. The diesel engines are typically brilliant Fiat units but they command a hefty premium over the lovely petrol engines.
Petrol models make great used buys. A five year old 2.0 petrol will cost, on average £1800 less than it's diesel counterpart and will have similar mileage. Insurance is three groups higher but servicing is cheaper. Go for mid range Lusso trim.
Pay around £5800 for a five year old 2.0 petrol Lusso. A similar spec 1.9 JTDM diesel will cost £1200.00 more.
Depreciation is likely to be steady on these cars and highly affected by specification and mileage. There is no best time to buy on these cars.
