The fourth generation A4 is the most confident and distinctive. Rather than trying to be BMW-like the Audi has set it's own standard. It boasts a light steering feel, lots of power and gadgets.
The styling is more distinct and bold than its competitors, but it offers the same level of space and practicality as competitors. Which is making the A4 more popular and keeps prices firm.
Expect to pay a heavy premium for diesel engined cars of around £2000. The petrol motors are very good though and we would recommend the 1.8T as more than up to the task.
Prices for the A4 are very spec sensitive. The premium S-Line spec is a trade off as the big wheels and hard suspension ruin the A4's ride. But it looks great. Go for the SE trim and 1.8T petrol power if you value smoothness over looks.
Depreciation is going to stay low on diesel variants of this car. So our pick is a petrol 1.8T in SE spec with around 60,000 miles showing for about £16,000.
Whist diesel purchase price will be high, the car will retain it's value well over time. So it's a consideration, but petrols are a snip.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Audi A4 you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Audi A4 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Audi A4 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Audi A4 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
