The A8 is the absolute exemplar of solid German respectability. Audi’s competitor to the Jaguar XJ, Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series is typically reserved but also a typically excellent luxury saloon.
The 3.0 diesel engine really suits this car. The 4.2 diesel is great but slightly over-the-top unless you regularly drive from Munich to Berlin at crazy speeds. Petrol cars are great and cheap but lose value like last year’s fashion.
You can save loads by going petrol, but if you plan on doing many miles, go for the popular 3.0 diesel engine coupled with the Quattro four-wheel-drive system. It’s just such a brilliant car in this specification. And it will hold its value.
The 3.2 Multitronic is the best petrol choice. It’s two-wheel-drive, so much less complex than the all wheel drive diesels which can be expensive to repair. The 4.0 V8 will be hard to sell on, but cheap to buy.
Prices are pretty similar for the 3.0 and 4.2 diesels – this reflects the higher complexity and C02 emissions of the 4.2 and it’s inferior fuel economy. Pay around £30,000 for a two year old car.
Depreciation is fairly heavy on this car, like others in its class. It is consistent though, at around 20-25% per year, so buy and sell at any time.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Audi A8 you would aim to buy a 4 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Audi A8 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Audi A8 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Audi A8 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
