Ettore Bugatti once derided Bentley for producing the ‘fastest lorries in the world’ and you can kind of see what he meant when you look at the GT. It’s heavier than Metallica.
It’s a lovely car though – incredibly easy to drive fast and with real presence. It’s also practical for a car in this class with four usable seats and a big boot. This has made it pretty popular with moneyed buyers, which as kept prices relatively soft.
The continental series, be they GT, convertible or four-door Flying Spur, all drive in the same deeply refined manner. Which you buy depends solely on the level of practicality you need. There are many more GT models about so those tend to be cheaper.
Remember that all the coupe cars, even the latest revised models, look pretty much the same. If it’s the experience of driving one you want; an early car will do it.
Pay around £35,000 for an early car with quite high miles but beware, the cheapness of these cars reflects potential repair costs. Best to pay around £45,000 for a 5 or 6 year old car with low miles.
There is quite a large drop nearly new and at this level that translates into a large chunk of cash. After that depreciation is gentle in percentage term but heavy if you consider the amount of money.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Bentley Continental you would aim to buy a 4 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
