The 7 series is BMW's eternal rival to the masterful Mercedes S'Class. It lacks that cars arrogant excellence but more than makes up for it by being a much more sporting drive. More than adequate accommodation couple with a brilliant range of engines make this somewhat of a winner.
The depreciation on these cars is as brutal as Bill Sykes. But they are very good. The 5 series, though cheaper to buy new, is no less complex and expensive. Servicing cost are similar. This makes the 7 series a strangely rational choice.
There's only really the 730D available - V12/V8 petrol cars exist but you won't find one. If you do, bargain hard! LWB cars are needlessly huge in the back. Only useful if you tend to wear stilts on a daily basis.
Short wheelbase 730d in black with the smallest wheels. Keep it for years - look after it and the car will outlast you.
Pay around £30,000 for a three year old car with just under 30,000 miles on the clock.
Well, it matters not. Any time after new gives a vast saving. Prices fall off a cliff nearly new and just keep going. Buy and sell at any time.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current BMW 7-Series you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel BMW 7-Series cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol BMW 7-Series cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Diesel BMW 7-Series cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
