The X1 is BMW's competitor in the junior exec 4X4 market. It's a compromise between a 1-Series, 3-Series and X3. Why you would want one over a 3-Series estate is beyond us..
The X1 is heavily based on the excellent BMW 3 Series and both cars are very similar. The X1 simply has a higher driving position and trades some handling sharpness for ride and security.
The X1 is very well suited to the 2.0 diesel engine coupled with BMW's ultra-smooth autobox. This is the combination most choose and will hold its value very well. If you don't plan to sell on for years, go for the petrol manual and save shed loads.
Go for a petrol engine with a manual gearbox. If you can, try to pick up an SE spec car as BMW sport models tend to have a very harsh ride on UK roads.
Even though the X1 is a very new car there is already a price disparity of around £2000 between petrol and diesel cars. The cheapest X1s are 2.0 petrols - pay around £20,000 for one or pay two grand more for a diesel.
The early signs are that all X1 models will depreciate slowly. This is a car you can buy and sell at any time.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current BMW X1 you would aim to buy a 4 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
