The second generation Z4 builds on the strengths of the first, adding a folding metal roof into the mix, with updated styling and improved engines. But its largely the same car.
Carried over from the MK1 are the Z4's has controversial looks, good handling balance and powerful engines. Sadly the cabin is still small the ride a bit harsh.
The Z4 makes most sense with the smaller engines. Fitted with the bigger units it strays dangerously into Porsche territory - it just isn't quite good enough at that level.
The 3.0 petrol engine is SE trim is our top tip if you want something smooth. Or the Sport spec if you don't mind trading road noise and ride for looks and grip.
Pay £26,000 for a two year old 3.0 Z4 in SE spec with under 10,000 miles on the clock.
The best time to buy is around 3 years as it takes a massive drop in value at MOT time. After that though, it is very flat.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current BMW Z4 you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
