Chevrolet's Lacetti offers a cheap and left field family motoring solution. This is one of the former Daewoo cars though, so it's not in the league of newer Chevrolets.
The Lacetti is decent to drive with a small but effective range of engines and trims. Extremely well equipped for the money. Cheap to run and insure.
The lack of a diesel option means that all Lacetti prices are roughly equivalent of each other. The mid-range 1.6 is probably the best bet. This is also the only choice if you want an automatic gearbox.
Go for a 1.6 petrol Lacetti in mid range SX trim. This is a useful 4 insurance groups lower than a 1.8 sport. The car will have all the toys you need at a bargain price.
Pay £7900 for a nearly new car or use the 27% drop at MOT time (3 year old) to bag yourself a real bargain at around £3400 cheaper.
The best time to buy is at three years old when the first MOT is due. Depreciation can be as high as 27% in that year. After this the Lacetti should depreciate at a steady rate of 9% per year.
