The C5 is Citroen's current entrant in the highly competitive Mondeo class. It takes a typically French approach with the emphasis on Gallic style and comfort. Well built and capacious the C5 offers a credible, left field alternative to the competition.
The C5 sacrifices handling for comfort and that's probably a good thing. Relaxing to drive with a stylish cabin and excellent diesels. We've been trying to think of other reasons to recommend the C5 but, unless it's cheap, there aren't any really.
Citroen do make excellent diesel engines. The mid-range 2.0 litre is the best compromise as the 1.6HDi (and the petrols) struggle with the big, heavy C5. Spec-wise aim for the lower end of the range. The SX spec has all the toys you need.
Go for 2.0 diesel estate in SX spec with the automatic box for unruffled family progress. Interestingly the 2.7V6 diesel (which only comes with the auto box) is only going to cost you £500 to £1000 more and should have a round the same mileage.
Pay up to £17,000 for a one year old 2.0 litre diesel estate with around 9,000 miles on the clock. Saving over £6000 on new.
Depreciation is always going to be fairly sharp on this car - thus it makes sense to spend as little as you can and keep the car for a while. The cars will take a hit at three years come the first MOT.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Citroen C5 you would aim to buy a 3 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Citroen C5 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Citroen C5 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Citroen C5 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
