The Citroen Saxo is extremely easy to break into and most of them have been. You'll see signs of forced entry around the door and lock. If you can find one that hasn't been, buy it. It's an old fashioned small car and I mean that as a compliment.
Before there were impractical city cars, small cars were all like the Saxo. You can get adults in the back and the boot can take worthwhile luggage. There's not much more to it than that - there's a stereo, some have electric windows.
The diesels will all be smokey even though their average mileage is not that high. So give them, and the repair bills, a miss. The 1.1P engines, assuming they have been looked after are probably as cheap as motoring gets. But 1.4s make more sense.
The 1.4P is as cheap to buy as the 1.1P and the MPG is almost the same - you will only notice difference if you do a lot of miles. But the 1.4 is under less strain, making it more refined and less likely to break down if you service it correctly.
The 10 year old cars hover around £1,000. The last cars off the line are best made with most extras and as you will see in the Used Car Expert prices, there is no such thing as an expensive Saxo. Cars owned and loved by local private owners are best.
The Saxo is now pretty flat in depreciation terms. Buy the best one you can afford (and find) and drive it till it won't go any further. Then throw it away, it is too cheap to try and get much back from it by selling it on.
