The Fiat Grande Punto should not be confused with the original Punto which is a smaller car. But it does share the positives that made the original Punto a hit. Decent equipment, decent build quality, keen prices and jolly colours.
The Fiat Grande Punto is probably bought by former Punto owners who are no longer students but are having children for the first time. And why not? It is a spacious car with a big boot (for a small hatchback) and doesn't cost a lot to run.
Fiat's 1.2P engine is a little cracker that delivered for the old Punto on every level: nippy around town, refined at any speed, economical, reliable, gutsy. It is available in the Grande Punto, or there is the similar but slightly better suited 1.4P.
Because the Grande Punto is bigger and heavier than the old Punto the 1.4P, rather than the 1.2P, is probably the way to go. They have similar characteristics and identical 48MPG but the 1.4 has that little bit more power.
Three year old cars are a snip at under £6,000 with just 20,000 average mileage. The Active Sport trims are the most popular so expect to pay a bit more for them than the plain 'Active.'
Depreciation is steady if you forget about the massive loss taken in the first few months. This makes nearly new cars attractive, but they become really interesting at three years old as they are cheap and there's 3 or more reliable years left.
