A small, cheap car, that can do anything the bigger more expensive cars can do. Attractive, timeless design, until they put the great big grille on the very last facelift.
Four adults can sit in relative comfort - the tall car lends itself to decent space in the back. The interior trim will surprise you with its quality, which often includes a Blaupunkt stereo (as seen in older BMWs).
There is a very capable 1.2 petrol, a 1.4 petrol and a 1.9 JTD diesel. The 1.4 is only slightly more powerful than the 1.2, and costs more to buy, insure and fuel too. 5 doors adds just a few hundred quid to the cost, so worth it if you need them.
The 1.4 doesn't really offer any advantage over the 1.2 and the 1.9 JTD is an expensive engine to keep going, plus there are few on the market. So the 1.2, which is so able and in plentiful supply is the one to buy as you have loads to chose from.
£3,000 buys you a 7 year old model. £5,000 leet's you take your pick of the latest models. The 1.2s mileages tend to be arratic - some are huge, other tiny. But you can take at 7,000 or 8,000 as average.
You can buy at anytime without fear of heavy depreciation in pur e cash terms. But as a percentage, it is rarely out of high teens. So either buy and sell within 18 months or buy and hold on to it until it gives up on you.
