The Stilo is a very underrated car. It's Fiat's entrant into the Golf/Focus market and was replaced in 2007 by the equally underrated Bravo. Decent to drive, well built, handsome and very cheap the Stilo is a bit of a gem for the canny buyer.
A large and very practical interior combined with a huge estate option make this a brilliant cheap family car. A good range of petrol engines plus the brilliant Fiat diesels complete a strong hand for the Stilo.
The Fiat common-rail diesel engines are excellent. In terms of driving they are superior to even VWs. However the bargain hunter will go for the petrols. They are cheaper by 10 to 20% on average and will usually have lower mileage.
Specification is not really an issue on a car this old and cheap. Go for the most minimal (and cheapest) spec you can find that has air-con. We would recommend a 1.6 petrol Dynamic.
Pay £4200 for a five year old petrol Stilo in Dynamic Trim. Estates are roughly the same value and you could pay £700 more for a 1.9JTDM diesel in the same spec.
Depreciation is likely to be steady on these cars. There is no best time to buy or sell.
