While the Citroen C4 Picasso may be the most stylish of small MPVs, it feels like it made from recycled food packaging. Ford’s C-Max, by comparison, is less of a head turner, but feels more solid. Compared to the Vauxhall Zafira there is nothing in it. VW’s Touran is not better, but is a bit more money.
Unlike the last model, the C-Max now comes with the option of a third row of seats, making it a 7 seat car. Albeit, as with bigger MPVs, the use of 7 seats leaves no room for luggage.
Petrol cars are much cheaper. You could easily pay up to £2,000 more for a diesel car and we suggest you don’t, especially if you do short, urban journeys – you will just end up with big repair bills for the DPF filter.
There are a myriad trim and spec options; a Zetec has all you need and Titanium has all you want. Because used Titaniums often cost no more than a Zetec, we would go for them, even if there are a few more miles on the clock. Avoid the 1.0 petrol turbo because it isn’t powerful enough on a car this size and it’s massively complex.
Pay £12,500 for a 2 year old 1.6 diesel car with less than 15,000 miles on the clock. A similar car with the 1.6 petrol engine will be £1,000 less.
Depreciation is quite strong but no more than the class average. C-Max’s lose lots of money in the first two years, and a fair bit in the third year. But after that the losses are quite minor. We would buy at two years old if you want the nearly new feel, or three years otherwise.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Ford C-Max you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 4 years old.
Diesel Ford C-Max cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Ford C-Max cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Ford C-Max cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
