Like an Audi A6 estate, the Ford S-Max provides both a practical family space, without giving much away in terms of style or driver-fun. There are 5 normal seats and two smaller seats in the boot area. So they're fine for children and short hops.
In 2.0 TDCI Titanium X trim there is a sport button which stiffens suspension and tweaks the gearbox. Underestimate the potency of this little button at your peril. Wheel spin and speed-bump crash-landings will follow if you use it at the wrong time.
There is no such thing as a bad S-Max. Petrol cars are cheaper but the 2.0 diesel makes an ideal match for the incisive handling. The 1.8 diesel costs the same but is a little weak for such a big car.
The best value spec is Zetec. It has all you need and offers a useful £300 to £500 saving. Go for a 2.0 diesel motor and you cannot go wrong. If you need the car to be cheap. Go petrol and save £1000.
Pay no more than £14,000 for a 3 year old car in Zetec trim with the 2.0 diesel engine and less than 40,000 miles showing.
Buy at 3 years for a big saving. These cars are very, very popular so after that you can sell at any time.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Ford S-Max you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Ford S-Max cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Ford S-Max cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Ford S-Max cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
