Like an Audi A6 estate, the Ford S-Max provides both a practical family space, without giving much away in terms of style or driver-fun. There are 5 normal seats and two smaller seats in the boot area. So they're fine for children and short hops.
In 2.0 TDCI Titanium X trim there is a sport button which stiffens suspension and tweaks the gearbox. Underestimate the potency of this little button at your peril. Wheel spin and speed-bump crash-landings will follow if you use it at the wrong time.
There is no such thing as a bad S-Max. Petrol cars are cheaper but the 2.0 diesel makes an ideal match for the incisive handling. The 1.8 diesel costs the same but is a little weak for such a big car.
The best value spec is Zetec. It has all you need and offers a useful £300 to £500 saving. Go for a 2.0 diesel motor and you cannot go wrong. If you need the car to be cheap. Go petrol and save £1000.
