The Accord is very much a continuation of the progress Honda made with the previous generation car. Smooth, very refined and handsome the Accord is very much like a Japanese Audi A4.
The Accord is at least class competitive in every area but the diesel versions have only recently become available with automatic gearboxes and in terms of refinement they are off the pace. With Honda, petrol is the way to go.
Honda make some of the best petrol engines you can buy and they really work well with the Accord. The difference in fuel economy is not as great as you might think but the difference in refinement is huge.
As well as petrol engines, Honda also make excellent manual gearboxes - this means that the optimum Accords - those with a manual box and a petrol engine - are the cheapest second hand as this segment is dominated by diesel.
The optimum used Accord, a 2 year old 2.0 petrol manual Tourer in ES GT spec should cost around £15,500. Contrast that with £18,500 for a similar diesel and the choice is obvious.
Depreciation surprisingly chunk y on every year on diesels, so it will cost to own. Whereas the petrol loses lots in the first two years then settles down £ which is why it is our choice.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Honda Accord you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Honda Accord cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Honda Accord cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Honda Accord cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
