Used Honda Civic 2006 – Buyer’s Guide

Why buy a Used Honda Civic?

A brave car from Honda that looks unlike anything else. To drive it is fairly conventional and Honda has abandoned it's old multi link rear suspension for the relative crudity of a torsion beam at the back. Handling is great but the ride is firm.

The Civic has a great range of petrol engines and the 2.2 diesel unit from the Accord. The interior is as space age as the outside yet strangely intuitive to use.

Which is the best used Honda Civic?

The best compromise in the Civic range is the 1.8 petrol. The 1.4 is underpowered and the diesel model does not justify its premium. The impeccable reliability of the Honda petrol engine cannot be ignored. Go for a manual. The change is peerless.

We recommend a 1.8 petrol in ES spec. Unless you want a sports car, avoid the sport models as the large wheels and tyres further compromise the already harsh ride.

Fault Checks for the Honda Civic

What should I aim to pay for an Honda Civic?

Pay around £11,200 for a three year old 1.8 petrol in SE spec. If you want to go diesel then you will need around the same money but service costs will be higher and the mileage will around 30% more.

The best time to buy is at three years old when the first MOT is completed.

Honda Civic Prices & Depreciation – Graph - Fuel differences

Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Honda Civic you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.

Diesel Honda Civic cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.

Petrol Honda Civic cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.

Petrol Honda Civic cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
