The Hyundai i20 completed the Hyundai transformation. Like the smaller i10 and bigger i30 it is stylish enough to sit alongside other cars and not embarrass you. The equipment levels and warranty reputation mean a Hyundai is not seen as a down market car.
The interior is not exciting, but it does have high levels of standard equipment. It has good all round visibility, reasonable refinement on motorways and plenty of space for a car this size. It's the kind of car that you just use and use and use.
There are three trim levels: classic, comfort and style. Go for the comfort or style if you can so you get the most gizmos and best trim. There is a 1.2P, 1.4P and a 1.4D. The 1.4D offers 64 MPG to the 54 and 50 offered by the 1.2 and 1.4Ps respectively.
The 1.4 petrol gives a more refined drive, better power output and is as much as £1,000 less than the diesels in the early years on the used market. So, that's a no brainer choice unless you do well over 10,000 miles a year when diesel pays off.
In areas where there are few Hyundai dealers, you will find dealers asking top money. So shop around and show the dealer internet prices (including the Used Car Expert prices) so that you don't pay over £9,000 for nearly new cars with around 5,000 miles.
Buy when your local dealer has had one on sale for a long time. There is no other way to get a cheap Hyundai really. There are too few on the market, at too few dealers, who know in most cases that they will sell eventually.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Hyundai I20 you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Hyundai I20 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Hyundai I20 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Hyundai I20 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
