The Sonata is Hyundai's entry into the Mondeo class. Only available in CDX trim with either 2.0 or 2.4 petrol power this is a no frills family car that is durable, roomy and deeply sensible - or very dull if you value desirability over form and function.
It does exactly what it says on the tin. Transports you and your family in a simple, sensible and very cheap manner. A good car and well priced.
There really is little to choose between the 2.4 and 2.0 litre petrols - except the 2.4 has an auto option.
As you are being sensible anyway then the 2.0 litre petrol in base trim is the way to go.
Pay just under £6,000 for a four year old 2.0 litre petrol Sonata. It is possible to pay up to £12,000 for a nearly new model but, unless the warranty attracts you, there's little point.
The best time to buy is at three years when the first MOT has been issued. After that depreciation is going to be a steady 20% on all models. Not a car to buy for re-sale.
