Don't be put off by the looks. The overly retro and slightly staid styling of the S-Type hides a fine car. An excellent ride and handling balance, luxury interior and competitive engines make for a proper Jaguar driving experience.
The confusing mix of old-school looks and bang-up-to-date tech confused buyers and meant that the S-type has attractively soft prices for such a fine car. The 2.7 diesel is still in use in the XF and the 4.2 petrol V8 is snarling masterpiece.
As the S-Type is a bargain anyway the 2.7 diesel makes the most sense. The petrols are slightly cheaper but they are likely to continue to depreciate at a horrendous rate.
The best S-type to buy is the 2.7 diesel in SE spec. Avoid the larger wheels if you can as they damage the car's unusually fine ride.
Pay around £10,000 for a four year old diesel S-type in SE spec with around 55,00 miles showing. A very late model, 2 year old model will cost up to £17,000.
Depreciation is slowing all the time on these cars because now Jaguar have stopped making them, they have become more popular.
