The X-type is Jaguar's ill-fated entrant into the 'Junior Executive' class. Based on the second generation Mondeo it's lowly underpinnings and staid styling hamstrung the car from the beginning. Consequently soft prices make it a second hand bargain.
The Mondeo that the X-Type is based on was a class leader but the X-Type competes in a different class ? and falls slightly short. Sadly it's also got a horrific diesel engine unit. All 2.5 and 3.0 petrols are 4WD.
The best X-types are automatics as the manual cars have a very awkward clutch pedal. This counts out the diesels and the premium of £1100 they command over petrols. The little seen 2.0 V6 petrol is a proper bargain.
You can't go wrong with a petrol estate X-Type. They have much lower miles than the diesels (10,000 less on average), are very practical and are absolutely lovely to drive.
Pay £12,700 for a 3 year old 2.5 auto estate model. This will be around £100 cheaper than the 2.2 diesel and will have 10,000 miles less on the clock. A canny choice.
The X-type is out of production now and the big hits have been taken. Buy and sell at any time.
