The current XK may look like a traditional (and gorgeous) sports car but under the skin it boasts a high-tech aluminum chassis that makes it very light. Couple this with a great big petrol V8 and you have proper, effortless oomph.
The XJ is an equal to the Porsche 911 in terms of handling. Yet it can be a restful, calm drive in the way the jittery 911 never manages. A truly fine car although some of the interior can seem flimsy.
You can have a V8 - supercharged or otherwise and you can have an automatic gearbox. No manual. The car is set up so well that you need no more.
The supercharged R versions are very, very fast but you don't really need it. The convertible is stiff as a board and worth the extra outlay.
Pay £35,000 for a 3 year old 4.2 convertible. Later 5.0 models command a premium of £10,000 and whilst they are better ? they may not be ten grand better.
There is a clear dip in prices at around 2 years reflecting the cars early facelift. Buy at 3 years and hold on.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Jaguar XK you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
