Massively able off road but way behind the pace on tarmac the Jeep Cherokee is a 4X4 of the old school. Comfy and tough but handles and rides with the grace of a drunk.
Cheap, very cheap - especially as a petrol. But that's because nobody wants one. Strangely, the agricultural diesel doesn't really work in this car.
There is a big premium to pay for a diesel engine - usually around £1000. Don't do it. It's a old, old engine and it feels it. Also you have to have a manual box with the oil burner and it shifts like an ancient tractor.
Go for a 3.7 V6 petrol in Limited spec for that full Texas Housewife vibe. Very cheap and unstoppable in the snow - even on normal road tyres.
Pay £7000 for a 5 year old 3.7 V6 petrol with less than 40,000 on the clock.
At whatever point you buy you are going to lose money. Best wait till the cars are at least 5 years old. If you intend to keep it for a long time then buy nearly new. First year depreciation is very severe.
