The classic big, suburban Jeep. Considered a small model in the US the Cherokee is a great big hulking SUV in the UK. It's a great experience though - very smooth, very tough and an utter bargain even with diesel power.
Less of a value statement than a Merc ML or BMW X5 but Cherokee has the advantage of being properly useful off road. Like a Land Rover in that respect and in that it wafts down motorways at incredible speed.
The Jeep Cherokee shares its brilliant diesel engine with several Mercedes models. You can get cars fitted with the loopy 5.7 Hemi V8 and they are bargains - but the Chreokee is more than just a bargain. With diesel power it's a great car too.
A 3.0 CRD diesel Cherokee in Limited (LTD) spec is one of the great used car bargains. More honest and much cheaper than the RX Lexus or Mercedes ML it's highly recommended.
£15,000 will get you a low mileage (less than 50,000) 4 year old car in Limited Spec.
Either buy nearly new with a petrol V8 or wait 3 or 4 years and get one for less than half the new value.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Jeep Grand Cherokee you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Jeep Grand Cherokee cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Jeep Grand Cherokee cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
