The Kia Picanto has sophisticated styling that makes it hard to tell it from a little Toyota. Until you look at the price, and then it's hard to tell it from a Hyundai. Which these days, is no bad thing. It suggests a reliable car at a reasonable price.
The Picanto is small but not tiddly and it has 5 doors, which makes a huge difference from an access point of view. A solid but uninspiring cabin provides ample room for two adults and two kids or at a push a quartet of OAPs.
LX specification has air conditioning, so that's the one to have if you can find one. The 1.1 litre petrol engine powers most of the range and is the most common on the used market.
Air conditioning, low number of owners, full service history, sensible colour. These are the things you want to look for in the advert if you plan to sell this car on after you have used it for a while.
Three year old cars drop below £5,000 and six year old cars can be as low as £3,000 but many are £4,000. Mileages of these cars should not be above 30,000.
1.1 litre petrols that have passed their MOT are the value buys because the first three years depreciation is heavy. But from 4 on it is quite slight so you can run one for a couple of years and then get most of your money back.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Kia Picanto you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 4 years old.
