It's not as big as a Vauxhall Astra, but it's not as small as a Ford Fiesta. It is a really nice size that falls between two conventional segments. If you want a smaller car, but don't want a tiny car, the Rio is there for you.
It is easier to fit adults in the back than in a small car and the boot has that bit extra space too. The cabin is not fancy, but not drab either. Most have a high level of equipment and there is a happy but no nonsense feel about driving the Rio.
The 1.4 petrol is an able engine and delivers its performance while also maintaining 45 MPG. The 1.5 CRDi diesel is more gutsy and comes home having delivered an impressive 60 MPG.
The diesel is the one I instinctively want to recommend, it offers 15 MPG more than the petrol. The trouble is the diesels are also a lot more expensive to buy. So you may have to buy an older diesel to bring the price within budget than if you go petrol.
4 year old Rios are less than £5,000, but then one year old cars with 6,000 miles are less than £8,000. The Rio is an affordable, reliable car no matter what your budget really.
Petrols depreciate by 3-5% less than the petrols each year. So the older the car, the bigger the saving for buying petrol. But both cars are steady in their depreciation so there are no big losses to avoid or savings to make.
