The third generation Discovery is a remarkable vehicle. It can transport you and your family in total comfort pretty much anywhere on the globe. It's tough but can be temperamental.
The Discovery gives an almost unmatched driving experience; luxurious and smooth. You have to slow down a lot for the corners mind - or just drive over what's there.
The 4.2 V8 petrol gets through the most incredible amount of fuel. It's very cheap but the petrol cost is as great as any other car in production. Go for the 2.7 diesel auto or later 3.0 variant if you have the means.
Don't worry too much about spec - all the cars are pretty well equipped - don't buy a manual - it just doesn't suit the car and you'll never sell it on.
Pay around £27,000 for a 3 year old 2.7 diesel auto HSE. This car should have no more than 40,000 on the clock.
There is a huge from nearly new to 4 years old. Save a fortune and buy then.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Land Rover Discovery you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Land Rover Discovery cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Land Rover Discovery cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Land Rover Discovery cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
