The GS is Lexus's answer to the 5-Series, E-Class and A6. A left field choice there is no diesel but there is a hybrid available. Incredibly well made and very stylish the GS is an interesting choice in a very staid sector of the market.
It lacks the sparkle of the 5-Series or the respectability of the E-Class but the GS has plenty of positives. Gadget-laden interior, good looks and a great range of engines make the GS a rational choice.
If you buy a hybrid GS you are buying into the latest, most advanced engine technology available but you pay heavily for doing so. The normal 4.6 V8 may be a better buy over the long term as it's far simpler to maintain.
The obvious choice is the GS300 with its comparatively simple 3.0 litre petrol engine. Depreciation is a steady 10% and the car has proven, reliable mechanicals and can be serviced by any Toyota dealer. SE spec has every option you could need.
A 4 year old SE spec GS300 should cost £15,000 and should have around 45,000 miles on the clock. You can get a hybrid 450h for about £1000 more but the mileage is likely to be 20,000 to 30,000 higher.
The best time to buy is at three years when the first MOT has been issued. After that depreciation is going to be steady. The hybrid version has escaped the uncertainty over reliability the has affected secondhand values of the Prius.
