An underrated car, the Mazda 3 is a talented player in the Golf/Focus segment and has the ability to take the fight to both. Exceptionally well made, with Mazda reliability, the low profile of the 3 and it's equally low prices, make it a great choice.
The Mazda 3 majors on driver appeal. The car is Ford Focus-based and shares that car's excellent dynamics. But the cabin is stylish and well planned. Plus it has Mazda's more enjoyable-to-use gearbox.
The 1.6 petrol model Mazda 3 tends to be around £700 cheaper, on average, than its 1.6 diesel counterpart. In this instance petrol and diesel mileage is similar so we'd go for the diesel on account of its 56MPG.
The best engine is the 1.6 diesel. In terms of Spec, Mazda are generous with the 3 so even the base car has all you need. We would opt for the mid range TS spec as that is a very well equipped car.
A 3 year old Mazda 3 with the 1.6 diesel engine in TS spec with 30,876 miles showing will cost around £8900.
The best time to buy will be at 3 years old when the first MOT is completed.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Mazda 3 you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Mazda 3 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Mazda 3 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Mazda 3 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
