Sharp to look at and sharp to drive. The 6 is a highly rated, Mondeo-based family car that delivers on every level. Traditional Mazda reliability, combined with a striking shell and Mazda's sporty driving dynamics. What's not to like?
The 6 is basically a Japanese take on the Mondeo. It is a little more grey inside, but it more than makes up for that with a more involved driving feeling, excellent engines and gadgetry.
There is a near £2000 premium for diesel Mazda 6's. If you intend to keep the car and are not worried about re-sale then go for a 2.0 petrol. The refined, revvy nature of the engine really allows you to exploit the fine chassis.
The best compromise for the canny buyer is a Mazda 6 2.0 litre petrol in TS spec. This will save you £2000 and you should get a car with substantially lower mileage than if you buy diesel.
Prices range from a 1.8 petrol in basic S spec at two years old (£12,000) right up to a loaded Sport spec 2.2 Diesel at £17,500 nearly new.
Depreciation is going to be low on the Mazda 6. That means, whist purchase price will be high, the car will retain its value well over time.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Mazda 6 you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 4 years old.
Diesel Mazda 6 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Mazda 6 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Mazda 6 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
