A work of genius and as perennial as the road itself, the MX-5 is the gold standard in handling terms and by far the best small, cheap sports car. Very well built, cheap to run, and cheap to buy the MX-5 is something of a no brainer.
The MX-5 is as close to perfect as you are going to get with any secondhand sports car. The 1.8 is a touch underpowered and it can be unrefined but, take it from us, the MX5 is a belter.
Later cars feature a simple mechanical folding roof system which is well worth the extra pennies.
Any MX-5 is good really - if you can, go for a later, folding roof car but don't ruin the sublime handling by opting for oversized wheels. With the MX5, less is more.
Pay around £10,000 for a 3 year old car with around 25,000 miles on the clock.
Depreciation is likely to be gentle on the MX-5. Buy with confidence whenever you like - it's a great car.
