The current E-Class has been hailed as a fine return to traditional Mercedes values of toughness, maturity and comfort. All the engines are excellent and the interior is roomy, very well made and very, very easy to use.
If you can afford the high purchase price all variants of this car make a very strong case. Incredibly quiet and refined the E-Class offers a driving experience that is second to none. Estates have higher capacity than any rival.
Mercedes have blurred the line between petrol and diesel with this car. The petrols now offer remarkable economy and for this reason their cheaper secondhand price gives them the edge.
We would recommend a 1.8 turbo petrol in E250 guise. This offers a saving over the E200D of around £3000.
Pay £21,000 for a E250 petrol with 10,000 miles showing. A top spec nearly new E350D can cost as much as £45,000. Comparatively, a loaded 5.5 petrol V8 E500 will set you back £4000.00 less.
Depreciation is going to be low on this car (on most engines). That means, whist purchase price will be high, the car will retain its value well over time.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Mercedes E Class you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Mercedes E Class cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Mercedes E Class cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Mercedes E Class cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
