The Mercedes-Benz R-Class has space, comfort and luxury. It offers refinement, space and practicality on the inside. But it's hearse-like shape and vast proportions make it difficult to park and a bit unfashionable.
At the right price, the Mercedes R-Class is a luxury MPV that shouldn't be ignored. But if you can't find a cheap one in your area then there are many other large-MPVs that can do a better job in a more attractive way.
There are some petrol cars with the 350 engine that are bargains if you can find one. They cost £3000 less than the 3.0 diesels and have much lower miles.
Go for an R350 Mercedes R-Class in SE spec.
Pay £17,000 for a 4 year old R-Class R350 petrol in SE spec with less than 35,000 miles showing. That's a little under half the new price. A diesel version of the same car will cost you £3000 more.
Either buy nearly new if you can find one or at 4 years when the bulk of the savage depreciation has already happened.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Mercedes R Class you would aim to buy a 4 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Mercedes R Class cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Mercedes R Class cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Mercedes R Class cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
