This car has sat on top of Mercedes' sports car range for the best part of 10 years and it's still competitive with any rival. Untouchable when new the design has aged well. Substantial engine and styling upgrades have kept it fresh.
The longevity of the design gives this car the residuals an edge over rival such as the lovely Jag XK and the fierce Maserati GT. The range of engines is comprehensive and the ride/handling and interior absolutely first class.
The 350 is ample though the 500 gives the car the effortless performance you would expect. The 5.5 AMG models and the 600 V12 cars are specialist only - bills can be terrifying.
Go for a 500. The price difference between this and the smaller 350 is too small to call. The owner profile of these cars tends to mean they are cherished and serviced well. Make sure this is the case.
Pay £25,000 for a 5 year old SL500, about a third of the cars new price. A 350 car should cost around the same depending on spec.
Around 3 years with its first MOT is a good time to buy. Nearly new cars also depreciate fairly heavily, losing around 10% straight out of the showroom.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Mercedes Sl Class you would aim to buy a 4 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
