The first generation Mercedes SLK was an unqualified success in sales terms and an utterly brilliant little car. A direct rival for the BMW Z4 and Audi TT it was the first premium car to offer a folding metal roof.
A simple and proven range of engines, a smart interior and cheap but stable prices make this a no brainer. Handling is competent and the ride typically Mercedes like. Very reliable and relatively cheap to repair as well.
The 200K models are ok but slightly underpowered - the 230K is a better compromise though both are slightly rough sounding which can be at odds with the SLKs luxury role. Better to opt for the smooth 320.
Pick a 320 in Avantgarde or Elegance spec. Sport models are ok but if you want that kind of handling you might be better off with a Z4. Make sure any car you buy is an auto. The manual box is a weak spot to say the least.
Pay £8000 for a 6 year old car with around 80,000 miles on the clock. Expect to pay around £1000 less for a 200 or 230K. This should have mileage 10,000, or so lower.
Depreciation is likely to continue to be steady on these cars ? they have had their big drops already.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Mercedes Slk Class you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
