The Rover 75 based MG ZT was designed under the ownership of BMW and it shows. Well built, good looking and very sporting in the traditional British manner, the ZT offers cheap, dynamic progress for the whole family.
The ZT's ride/handling compromise was class leading when released and still takes some beating. It rides well, has a luxurious interior and a good range of engines. Prices are surprisingly firmgiven Rover's demise.
With the ZT the 2.0 diesel model is strongly recommended over the petrols as it is a state of the art (for the time) BMW turbodiesel and is a far better bet than the venerable 'K' series petrol engines that the ZT has to offer.
Go for a 2.0 diesel. We cannot recommend the 1.8 and 2.0 petrol models as the 'K' series engine is prone to all sorts of mechanical issues. If you buy a ZT, insist on an excellent service record. The 2.5 V6 petrol is better but it is very thirsty.
The diesel models carry a premium but in this case it is well worth paying. Pay around £3000 for a seven year old model. An estate will cost around £350 more.
The depreciation on these cars has levelled out now but will always be much less on diesel cars. You can buy or sell at any time.
