The Mini offers BMW quality, with several seductive design touches that are all inkeeping with the spirit of the original Mini. Despite it being enormously common and the oldest models being very affordable, it is still seen as exclusive.
In addition to being stylish, the Mini has a spacious cabin which is as easy for four adults to access as any 3 door car. In 'One' trim the Mini also feels understated and good value. It's only negative is a hard to load boot.
If you want sensible you want the One trim. If you want uber-sensible, you want the diesel engine too. If being cool is your thing, you want the Cooper. If you aspire to super-cool, you want the Cooper S or the cabriolet.
The 1.6P offers 42 MPG, although this drops on the cabrio and Coopers. The 1.4D offers around 60 MPG. From 3 years old on, the Coopers are £2,000 - £3,000 more than the petrols with 'One' speciation. The diesel sits in between the two in price point.
Three year olds are £10,000 - £12,000. impressively for owners, eight year old cars are still worth £7,000 provided the mileages is in line with the genuine average for these models (see used Car Expert's latest price guide to get the average mileage).
Buying a three year old car can save over £6,000 from the new price, but gives you a low average mileage of 12,000, and if you only add around 6,000 a year (as most do) you can sell on before the next big drops start at 7 or 8 years old.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Mini ONE you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Mini ONE cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Mini ONE cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
