Stylish, refined but not really premium, this generation of Lancer is a bit of a surprise package in the Focus/Astra sector. Like a Mazda, it is more stylish to look at than the mainstream.
Any Lancer will handle and ride well. The interior is clean, modern and simple. But it feels more like a Kia than a Vauxhall in quality terms. Smooth petrols and VW sourced diesels complete a neat package.
There is a small premium for diesel cars and we would argue that it's not worth paying as the old VW units are unrefined and pretty far off the pace in this class. The petrols are great and it's these, particularly the sweet 1.5, that we'd go for.
Go for mid ranking Elegance trim or better to make this car more enjoyable than the Korean competition.
Pay as little as £8500 for a one year old 1.5 Elegance £ but watch out for sudden drops in value.
The best time to buy will be at 3 years old when the first MOT is passed. Prices are erratic.
