The Mitsubishi Outlander is sister car to the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser and like those cars it's a competent, if slightly bland and left-field mid size SUV that majors in smooth on road dynamics and interior space.
The Mitsubishi Outlander rides and handles well for a 4X4. The interior is well built and thought out. However, the Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan Qashqai have leapfrogged the Outlander in terms of outright ability.
Diesel is the only option so that slightly limits your choice to 2.0 and 2.2 variants. The 2.0 is a tough VW unit but it's noisy and rough. 2.2 smooth but dear.
Go for a 2.0D model. It's a pretty utilitarian car really so you might as well save a few quid.
Pay no more than £14,500 for a 3 year old Mitsubishi Outlander with 45,000 miles or less on the clock.
Buy at 3 years. The value holds up well nearly new then plummets at 2 years. Buy on the third.
