The Micra looks flimsy - it's something to do with the cute boggle-eye headlights. But take it for a drive and you will be surprised how well made the cabin feels. The Micra is the last of a dieing breed. A small budget car that does everything.
The Micra may be the last car to stay true to the principals of the original Mini. It has adequate room front and rear. A boot that can take a modest amount of luggage. Easy -to-repair and frugal engines. It is easy to live with.
It's such a light little car that anything more than the 1.2 petrol engine is like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. It offers 43 mpg and stays in super-cheap insurance group 2. But if you do billions of miles the 1.5 DCI diesel (61 mpg) is excellent.
There is a 1.0P engine, that's too small. A 1.4P engine that's too big. Which leaves the idea 1.2P. Unless you are a courier or like being blown around motorways in small cars a lot of the time - in which case the 61 MPG 1.5D is the one to buy.
3 year old cars are between £6,000 and £7,000 with average mileages of 18,000 for petrol and 32,000 for diesel. 7 year old cars drop to a very attractive £2,500-£3,000 with 50,000 miles or less for petrol, and a slightly worrying 80,000 for diesel.
Once the Micra is 7, it almost stops depreciating. So you can buy a car for £3,000 and sell it four years later for over £2,000 if you look after it. The other bargains are 2 year old cars, which have lost a chunk - up to to £4,000 - but still feel new.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Nissan Micra you would aim to buy a 2 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
