The Nissan Note looks boxy, but that high roof gives it an airy feel inside, easy access and the potential to carry large loads, although most get used as standard family hatchbacks. A large number are also bought by retirees and motobility customers.
Nissan and Renault share engine tehcnology and produce an excellent 1.5 Dci plus reasonable petrol units. Interior quality is as good as most mass market cars. It's just a shame that the suspension doesn't do more to iron out pot holes and bumps.
If buying something between 2 and 5 years old, it is hard to see why you wouldn't buy the 1.5 Dci (diesel) in SE trim. It's a seriously refined, frugal, flexible engine that delivers 55 MPG.
The advantage of the Dci is that it doesn't cost any more than the 1.6 petrol which only manages 43 mpg. There is a 1.4 petrol which will be slightly cheaper to insure and will offer 2-3 mpg more than the 1.6. But they aren't as versatile as the Dci.
3 year old cars cost just under £8,000. The Dcis have average mileage of 25-30,000, while the petrols are nearer 18,000. Four year old models cost between £5,000 and £6,000 with diesel mileages getting into the 40s and petrols into the 30s.
Note depreciation drops after it has its first MOT. From then it's around 10%, so you can expect to lose £500 a year which is reasonable on a car in this segment.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Nissan Note you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
