Comfortable, well built, well appointed, economical and safe the 308 ticks every box except for it's um... Challenging looks. The chubby looks and mass market badge have kept prices soft. Face lifted models and the CC are attractive though.
Other than the grille the 308 really is a very well resolved car and somewhat of a return to form for Peugeot after the lacklustre 307. It can be luxurious inside and the ride/handling balance is properly sorted.
The latest generation of petrol engines are a massive improvement over the previous petrol engines and are close to the diesels for emissions and economy. They are also usefully cheaper secondhand running at about £1000 cheaper on average.
The pick of the bunch here is the 1.6 Vti in SE spec. A comparative diesel will cost £1000 more and will usually have a much higher mileage.
