The 406 is an old car now but it doesn't show. Still lovely to drive and very handsome. 2.0 petrol is quick, 3.0V6 savagely so. Peugeot introduced its current master of refined diesel power plants in this car.
Very cheap now as even the newest models are 6 years old. Usually highly specified they are tough cars which ride in a way more modern cars seem to have lost. Diesel models are worth less than saloon as they tend to be heavily used.
The diesel models are excellent but there is large premium asked over the petrols. The petrols also have a far lower (on average around 35% less) mileage and are cheaper to service and insure.
The pick of the bunch here is the 2.0 petrol in SE spec as a saloon if you can find one. The 3.0 V6 petrol is recommended if you don't mind the fuel bills as they are usually loaded with extras, tend to have lower mileage and tend to be well looked after.
These cars are seriously cheap now. You can pick up a 1.8 manual petrol, in good shape, for around £1350 and even a six year old, fully specified Executive model can be had for as little as £3000.
The depreciation on these cars has leveled out now but will always be much less on diesel cars. You can buy or sell at any time.
