The Cayman is basically a hard-top Boxster and competes with fixed roof versions of the BMW Z4 and Audi TT. Like the Boxster, some see it as a credible Porsche, others think it's the poor relation.
The Cayman is like a tasting menu for a 911. It offers some of the impracticality, noise and style, but is slightly more refined though not that much cheaper to buy. It shares the handling poise of the rest of the line-up.
The 2.7 or later 2.9 are ample. The early S cars carry a 3.4 which make them very fast but the Cayman, like the Boxster, is about balance, not speed. Later cars have a 2.9 engine and the option of the excellent PDK dual clutch gearbox.
A basic car an S in a classic colour like red or silver is the best way to go in terms of re-sale. A 911 will be easier to buy and easier to sell.
Pay up to £27,000 for a 3 year old 2.7 model with around 25,000 on the clock. It may seem cheap for a Porsche but the same money will get a 911 only a year older.
There is a clear dip in prices each year until around 4 years old, but buying at 3 years old and holding won't hurt the pocket too much.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Porsche Cayman you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
