The Proton Gen-2 is a simple, smart little family car that is OK to drive, cheap to buy and reliable. Simple and hassle free motoring. Ergonomically flawed but also unlikely to give you any undue worries.
Petrol only engines and the budget name have kept priced soft for the Proton Gen-2. But not always soft enough ? compare to other makes before jumping in.
There is little to separate any variant of the Gen-2. The 1.3 engines are mildly more economical but there's only 1 insurance group up for the 1.6 and the engine is less frenetic. All versions are well equipped.
We'd suggest opting for a 1.6 engine in combination with the mid-ranking GLS trim. This offers the best combination of performance, economy and specification.
You can get a 3 year old 1.3 model for £5300 and a 1.6 of the same vintage for £400 more.
The best time to buy will be at 3 years old when the first MOT is done. Depreciation can run as high as 25% at this time.
