This Renault Clio is all together more airy and light than previous versions. That feeling carries right through from the exterior looks, including optional glass roof panels, and the simple but inviting cabin, to the nimble driving experience.
The seats in the front are not as big as in some cars, but then the Clio is not as wide as some of its competitors. As a result the Clio nips through traffic more easily. Rear space is adequate even for adults and the boot will take a small weekly shop.
There is a 1.6 P that you might want if you are looking for an auto - but that's a thirsty combination. The real choice is a 1.2 TCE (petrol) or 1.5 Dci (diesel). The 1.5 Dci is an impressive all rounder which hits 64 MPG. The 1.2 TCE is almost as good.
The 1.2 TCE engine came out in 2007 to replace the 1.4 P. It uses a small, reliable turbo to make the 1.2 just as powerful as the bigger unit, but with better fuel consumption. It is slightly less refined - but this is the way all manufacturers are going.
Diesels are no more expensive than the petrols, but has a massively bigger average mileage pattern. Within 3 years, they have 20,000 miles on the clock than petrols. Three year old 1.2 TCE petrols are therefore the value buy at just £7,300.
You can buy these new via brokers for £2,000 under list price. Nearly new models are similar prices or slightly better. If you don't want a car under 1 year old, or just want to reduce the depreciation a bit more than that, then go for a 3 year old.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Renault Clio you would aim to buy a 1 year old and sell it before it is 4 years old.
Petrol Renault Clio cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Diesel Renault Clio cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
