A class competitive and subtle effort from Renault. Whilst it lacks the boldness of the Peugeot 407 and the handling prowess of the Mondeo it is still a worthwhile all rounder. Plus it is incredibly cheap on the used market.
The Laguna is cheap but cutting edge family transport. The interior is stylish and comfortable and the car offers a remarkable range of engines from the 1.5 Dci diesel to the 205BHP turbo petrols.
There is a large premium to be paid for a diesel Laguna. A 2.0DCi model at 2 years old will cost £1200 more than a 2.0 Turbo petrol. The petrol will have similar or less miles and will be highly specified. Even the tiny 1.5 diesel is £300.00 more.
The 1.5DCi will do an amazing 58mpg but it is likely to be in base spec and the engine will struggle with the Laguna. Thus it may be more unreliable. The Laguna to pick is the 2.0 Petrol turbo. It still does 37 MPG and this engine really suits the car.
We would pay around £8500 for a three year old 1.5DCi model. A 205BHP turbo petrol from the same year will cost £700 or so less. A top spec 2.0 DCi 180 will cost around £13,000 at a year old.
The best time to buy is at one or three years when the first MOT has been issued. After that depreciation is going to be steady on diesel models, especially the estate versions.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Renault Laguna you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 4 years old.
Diesel Renault Laguna cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Renault Laguna cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Renault Laguna cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
